TritonMUN Day 2!

4/22/2018

Wow! TorreyMUN had an amazing last day, and weekend overall!
Where to begin? The delegation won Outstanding Medium (sized) Delegation overall for their fabulous performance! Four of our delegates also received awards:
  • Lauren Ziment won Honorable Mention in UNICEF.
  • Sophia Williams received a Research Award for her superb position paper in UNEP.
  • Nikita Nair won Best Delegate in the WTO committee.
  • Matthew Wirtz won Best Delegate in the BP Oil Spill Crisis.
Everyone did a fabulous job all weekend, award or not, and we could not be more proud!
To sum up the last day, here is what happened in committees:
  1. WTO: Niki said that it "ended awesomely" and that everything was passed unanimously.
  2. SPECPOL: Avi said that it "ended well" and they found a way to unify Somalia under one government.
  3. OAS: Milan said that they came up with a comprehensive plan to attack the issue of sex trafficking in the Americas by "improving education, improving unemployment, and by establishing a UN coast guard and a Global Human Trafficking Database that is accessible to all OAS member states."
  4. UNEP: Sophia said that they came up with a way to address desertification by "setting up outreach programs to educate farmers on land management techniques, calling up on other UN Committees to help with climate refugees while fixing the issue of desertification. They also addressed the issues of overgrazing and deforestation.
  5. UNICEF: Lauren and her committee addressed the issue of gangs, and proposed a multifaceted solution that included "the formation of Youth Education Sanctuaries (YES centers) which would launch multiple outreach programs in low-income communities, including vocational training, speakers, tutoring, and after-school programs. They would also provide incentives to come such as: food, basic necessities, and jobs in the center for those of age."
  6. BP Oil: Matthew says, "we cleaned up the oil spill by burning the oil, using enzymes, microorganisms and oil skimming. After reducing the spill's impact on the environment, we geo-scanned the hole where the drill was in order to 3D print a custom cap and developed advanced aquatic drone technology in order to install it. At one point, some members of the committee considered establishing a BP state. Fortunately, this thought was dismissed to focus on exploring and drilling in space." All-in-all, a great crisis committee.
  7. Spanish Civil War: Zak said the committee "ended by starting WWII a few years early, in 1938. The Republicans were unable to resolve differences with the nationalist factions, however they were able to get rid of the nationalists and thus (sort of) won the war." It was very action-packed.
Thank you to everyone who supported them! This was a great end to our season this year, and we look forward to next year!
